For many people, the Ten Commandments are a list of do’s and don’ts, rules to follow to earn salvation or to earn the right to be called a “good person”.
People subconsciously think to themselves, “Well, I haven’t stolen anything today, I’m good. I’m okay. I’m doing well.”
They miss the mark completely.
The Ten Commandments WEREN’T given to us as a legalistic list to check off and we cannot earn our own salvation. Rather, they are God’s LOVE LANGUAGE. 😍
God is saying to the Israelites, through Moses, I love you. I want to have a holy, pure, amazing relationship with you as I have picked you to be my chosen people. I want to know you and I want you to know Me. I want to have a special bond with you but sin separates you from Me. Sin puts a barrier between us and I want you to have closer access to Me. In order to do that, here’s how to keep yourself pure and holy. Here’s the things you, in particular, need to work on. Here’s the things YOU struggle with as a people.
Those Ten Commandments given to the Israelites are very important to us today too, because it shows us what God values, what He cares about most when summed up. The things WE also can do to be holy, pure, set apart for Him in order to have a closer relationship with Him. 🤗
But those things He desires from us aren’t just outward, He wants them to be part of our hearts too. For example, stealing. Do not steal.
If we do not do that action of stealing, that’s great, but He is calling us to a higher standard of not even THINKING of stealing since stealing is wrong.
That means, wanting to steal someone else’s girlfriend or wife in your thoughts, that means stealing office supplies at work, that means stealing someone else’s blog popularity or keywords, and the list goes on and on. Stealing is theft, and even in thought, it’s sin and separates us from God.
We must be pure in thought, word, and deed.
Teaching children that at an early age is so important, to give them a vital understanding of who God is and to plant the seeds in their tender little hearts of right and wrong from an early age.
