Idk why, but I am just mesmerized with how people ate in the Bible. I feel like it connects me to Jesus more. Getting to know Him, how He lived (in practical ways), what He ate, all the things that He did, the things people don’t think about often like…
Jesus never knew soft, comfy pillows like we know them today.
In Jesus’ time (first-century Israel), people used several types of pillows, depending on their wealth and what they had available.
- Wool-filled pillows – Cloth or linen cushions stuffed with sheep’s wool
- Straw or dried reeds – Inexpensive stuffing used by poorer households
- Animal skins – Sheep or goatskins could be stuffed with wool or chaff
- Rolled-up clothing – A folded cloak or garment could serve as a simple pillow
- Feather-filled pillows – These existed in the Roman world and were more luxurious
They didn’t have the pillows like we know them today…think: memory foam or cotton.
We do know He slept on a cushion because in Mark 4:38, Jesus was sleeping in the stern of a boat on a cushion. The Greek word is proskephalaion, meaning a pillow or cushion.
It was probably a leather cushion used by the person steering the boat, rather than what we know as a pillow.
Jesus never knew things we take for granted like air conditioning systems, running water, video games, 🎮 refrigerators, and so much more. It’s fascinating to see all the things we are so blessed with every day that we all take for granted, yet He, the God of the universe, never experienced those things in human flesh.
It truly makes you appreciate all the modern conveniences we have today!
