My daughter is 8. She is the creative brains behind our team. Many of the pictures you see on the blog, you know, the good ones 😉 are her designs. She has a gift. Her and my mom are amazingly creative. They love doing DIY projects, creating something from nothing. I don’t know how they do it. It definitely skipped me. I’m very much an analytical thinker.
Easy Duck Tape DIY Back to School Supplies
Even though she’s only 8, I’m telling you, she’s going to be one of those teen millionaires like Origami Owl or something. She’ll probably start up some off the wall company and be huge. In the meantime, I get to watch her daily come up with these really out-of-the-box ideas. For instance, this Duck Tape school supplies idea. She chose Hello Kitty of course, and white and pink Duck Tape. She picked the pattern and went to town decorating all her school supplies. She didn’t do a perfect job, bear in mind, she’s 8. But, I think she did a fantastic job and it looks really pretty.
If your precious ones are into crafts and being creative, this is the perfect task. It keeps them busy for hours, and you really don’t need any special supplies. Make sure your scissors are nice and sharp, and be careful to cut the Duck Tape if toddlers are helping or your kids aren’t good with scissors.
List of supplies we used for this homemade project:
- Scissors
- Duck Tape (3 colors of your choice. You want a main color, a small 3rd color, and white or black or gray, something that is plain and fits well with your theme)
- Water bottle
- Chapstick
- Pen
- Pencil
- Notebook (we used a notebook with a plastic cover instead of a thick paper cover)
- She made a bookmark
- Binder
- She made a cute purse with a pocket inside. Just take a strip of Duck Tape and put another piece on top, so the pattern is showing on both sides and the sticky part is in the middle. Do that twice, the same size pieces, then tape the edges to stick them together and make your handle strap. Then make a little pocket for the inside.
I’m not sure about the longevity of this idea, especially like with the water bottle. What’ll happen when the tape gets wet (??), but overall, I think it’s a great idea and will make your child have something that is personalized and unique. Kids don’t want to all be the same. I’m so proud of her for wanting to be unique. It is something that took me over 30 years to develop and have the confidence to say, “Okay, yes I’m different. I’m not like you, you’re not like me. God made us all different. He made us unique.” Instead of running from it, I embrace it now, so this post means more to me than just a silly project. I am teaching my daughter to embrace the person God created her to be. I hope you will be inspired to cultivate that in your children as well if you don’t already. It is so important. We are not like the world, we are different. Called apart. Set apart for His glory.
Likewise, this would also make a really cute gift for an underprivileged child or a birthday girl in your child’s class. My daughter put her first name initial “A” on everything, but you could make any initial you wanted to fit the child’s name.
